I think it boils down to who’s willing to show up. I’m positive most people did not take the audition because of the travel required to get there.

It’s sort of a higher mid tier if that makes sense. In my opinion (as a Canadian in an orchestra), Tier A would be OSM Toronto NACO and Vancouver. Tier B would be Winnipeg, Orchestre Metropolitan, Calgary, Edmonton, Nova Scotia, etc. this list is not exhaustive nor comprehensive and is purely based on my opinion but I will say I have auditioned for or played with 3/4 in Tier A and 2 of Tier B.

I presume it would be higher for other instruments, but Calgary is very isolated and traveling to auditions is just a lot harder and more expensive for bassists.
