Yes I heard the same. 4 candidates in semis, none advanced. Sometimes I wonder why the larger Canadian orchestras even bother with these national rounds - I dunno about other instruments but with perc & timpani it seems like they almost never hire anyone
Yes this is my understanding as well. But when the Canadian citizens don't bother with the national rounds anymore, the purpose seems defeated.
In fact I recently heard the Toronto Symphony has decided not to hold national rounds anymore. A brief scroll of their audition postings shows all their advertisements are for international rounds. Interesting, I wonder if the other larger orchestras will follow suit
My understanding is that getting a Canadian work permit for an international hire is not possible without a document called a 'labour market opinion' that is issued by the government after the employer applies saying that it was impossible to hire someone from a national pool of applicants.
The Toronto Symphony's recent change of procedure is untested, and time will tell how their admin will get work permits for international hires.
