Even if you feel that this person deserved getting auto-advanced to finals, it doesn't change that the audition was, in a sense, "rigged" for them to win. I don't doubt that they are immensely qualified for the permanent position, but if the committee knows who they want, the audition just feels like a show. I get that the CBA probably requires them to hold the audition rather than just upgrade the person's contract, but they could at least stop the auto-advancing at semis so some anonymity can be preserved.
I took this and I think it was a legit audition. The person autoadvanced is already a tenured member of the orchestra. He took it last time when it was a no hire. And took it again, and was given a trial. This does not indicate a shoe-in. Because they haven’t even offered him the position.
All that said, I do agree they could autoadvance to the semis to preserve some anonymity!
The acting associate was given a trial after being auto advanced to finals. Only 3 advanced from prelims and then no one advanced from semis.
