UPDATE: heard Jaeook Lee and Muyan Yang were offered trials. 293 people auditioned!
word on the street is they auto-advanced many people to semis in the resume round, so they were extra strict in the prelims. it was the first violin audition in the new hall so who knows what they were listening for. my understanding is that there were almost 300 candidates.
Probably old news by now but I think it’s worth adding that the resume round was screened by an external committee, which means they were the ones who decided to auto-advance 40 people to semis. Ostensibly that leveled the playing field for the players who were already “known” to the NYP, but it also makes you wonder what kind of reasoning went into auto-advancing that many….
40+ auto advanced is wild. I get it’s the NYP, but that’s a ridiculous semi final round. The number of people getting auto advanced in auditions right now is insane. There are obvious reasons why someone might be auto advanced, but where’s the line drawn and how is it fair at a certain point? It’s not worthwhile for a lot of people to take auditions if they know 30+ people are already in semis. Perhaps a discussion for another thread..
That is not a prelim, it is a First Four style prescreening for the right to enter the actual audition. I wouldn't be surprised if both winners came out of the prelims, but this kind of narrowing needs to be done either through a tape or a resume screening. It is not fair or equitable to invite 300 candidates to a live audition, full stop.
Does anyone know how many of these 9 candidates advanced from a tape vs live prelim? And if hard criteria or a committee were used for auto advancement? I know it's the NY Phil, but I heard of some people with both major orchestra jobs and multiple big 5 finals having to play a prelim here.
A little info I have been able to confirm: prelim candidates can choose to play the live preliminary round or submit a recorded preliminary round audition. Most finalists came from the auto-advanced semifinalists. Auto-advanced candidates are determined by a committee, so it is useful to be known to the orchestra beforehand.

There is some wrong information here.
There were only two finalists. Both of them started in the prelims. Both of them were offered trials.
The audition committee did not know how many semi-final auditions they would be hearing, until the prelims were over.

They advanced only 9 from the 293 who played the preliminary, and 40 auto advanced to the semi from resume screening.
Is it still going on?
Finals are on Saturday.
