Whole audition felt a bit weird. Was changed from a 2 day audition to a 1 day audition a few days in advance. They then proceeded to ask for the longest first round I’ve seen from them (solo and 5 excerpts) and I’ve taken quite a few of their auditions.
Due to the long first round, the audition got about an hour behind. 6 of us were advanced to semis which started one hour after prelims ended.
I know I personally didn’t play as well in semis, but I was also not asked to play anything differently or again and would have been happy to do so. This sounded like the case with some other candidates.
All in all, it’s frustrating that they didn’t try to hear more while they had us all there. It sounds like they have 3 vacancies as well so I’m sure the current horn players are being overworked. Even if it had still resulted in a no hire, I feel not hearing anybody in a third round was a missed opportunity.
There’s only one opening at the moment, I think. They hired 3 at their last audition; as far as I’m aware, one has already checked in to the band and is working, and the other two are in the process of enlisting.
I should have been more specific— you’re correct in one concert band! Auditions coordinator said also 2 ceremonial spots and made it sound like they would have been willing to hire for those as well had there been strong enough candidates. Either way, they said to expect next audition in February 2025.
Pershing’s own chose not to advance any candidates to finals. No hire.
