Does anyone know why New World Symphony has five million people on their sublist and yet has the audacity to open auditions for alternates when they don't even call the people they already have? They've already accepted hundreds from all the summer festivals.
Is this a marketing strategy to keep people engaged for when they have an opening?
What's the point of having so many subs if they don't call any?
In addition to distributing opportunities across a lot of different subs, I'll say they primarily seem interested in hiring subs who will likely still apply for a fellowship in future years - it's a recruitment tool for them. If you've stopped applying or have become established in your career already, they're not gonna have you out just so you can have a fun week in Miami, they're gonna call someone who's still a student.
My take: New World is trying to give opportunities to as many people as possible. Might only sub once a year if you’re lucky but that could be a stepping stone to an opportunity of a lifetime.
That said, perhaps the alternative audition is a way to more formally create a a regular sublist to address the exact issue you’re pointing out.
