If you pass the recording round, does the US Army band pay for your flights/hotel for live round?
Do you have a better chance of getting the job if you do the recorded round or should you just audition on the audition day?

If you pass the recorded round, the band will pay for flights and hotel, at least at this time. Depending on funding, this policy can change but, as of now, yes.
If you pass the tape round, you are advanced to semis (the recorded round counts as a prelim round). If your tape is not accepted, you are still able to show up for the live prelim round but travel expenses will not be paid for.
Your chances are slightly better if you pass the tape round because you will be fresher for the semi round and be judged with less competitors, but you will also still have to win the day against whoever shows up.
My suggestion is you should send a tape. There’s no downside since you can still show up for the prelims and you can gain an advantage if your tape is selected.
