i've been on "both sides" of the committee so to speak - that is to say that i've been on a committee that hired the person we "liked" and also on one that did not hire the person we "liked." from my blind perspective, i simply chose the best player out of the options i was given...at least for me, i've found that identifying someone whose playing i've heard before behind a screen is a lot more difficult than it might seem. re: resumes in a final round, i know we don't do it during the audition; only after. re: "are screened auditions really impartial," i'd like to think they are. i've taken a lot of auditions (almost 30...) and anytime i got cut out of any round, i could point to exactly why, which leads me to believe that i was cut purely because my presentation did not meet the standard the orchestra was looking for.

if there's a full day for just finals, i would imagine they would conclude with plenty of time to take an evening flight. whenever i've seen auditions go late, it's due to having multiple rounds in a day with more candidates than expected. i saw one audition where it was semis/finals in one day and they didn't conclude until about midnight, but that's definitely on the extreme end of things. but yeah, as mentioned, asking the PM about a relative timeline would (hopefully) clarify things!

Alex Horton, Ian Hallas, and Andrew Sommer were offered section positions. Alex and Ian were offered trials for Asst. Principal. congrats everyone!!

update: Emily Krajewski has been offered a section position. she was previously on a one-year contract after getting runner-up at last year's section audition.

hi there - i'm sympathetic to the orchestra wanting to hire, but i think we will have to agree to disagree about the list. i just looked back at the list - 29 individual items, two of which were complete movements. also, specifying a Bach suite movement might turn away players that don't want to rework/replace the movement they've been auditioning on. it's not my intention to be combative...but i do think that the list itself is a contributing factor to the low turnout.

for the audition you are referencing, at the end of the day, all rounds were held behind a screen and a majority vote by the committee (including the MD) were necessary to hire - it was not just "handed to them." might be a good idea to step away from this and cool off before jumping to more conclusions. trust me when i say i understand the frustration of taking an audition and watching a favored candidate win, but often times that player prepared exceedingly well and had a great day of playing to win their job. there are also plenty of examples of favored candidates not winning because someone played better than they did. regarding the appointment of not-the-runner-up, i can't really comment on why they did that...your guess is as good as mine. i sincerely wish you the best!

the list being unnecessarily long was what turned me off from taking it...that along with the part where i had already predicted a no hire the second they announced it for this audition.

it will get to a point that nobody will come because they refuse to hire anyone.

one trial was offered to Sam Loeck. he is currently principal of Calgary Phil. not sure when the trial will happen.

Bobby Scharmann won this audition yesterday evening. he is a current member of the section. Chunyang W ang (thanks "bad word filter") was named runner up, and Jacob Diaz was the third finalist. all rounds were screened.

update: two one year positions were also offered to Sam Rocklin and Sam Dugo.
